I believe that Lean expands the mindset of traditional management systems making it more inclusive of all individuals. it’s more about how we solve problems rather than controlling the environment we are in. What’s your experience? Is our personal life much different?

The WHY: we are surrounded with opportunities to identify and fix problems…From our workplaces to our families and personal relationships. What happens when our solutions fail? Do we have the right coping mechanisms to deal with the failure?

The WIIFM: with all these opportunities to fix problems, Sometimes the solutions fail. Learning good habits and methods for dealing with failure can support our own personal development and begin to support true culture change in an organization.

my Advice: As a Lean Leader myself, I know that failure is a very common thing. How I cope with failure will be an example to those around me. If I retreat, my team will retreat. If I stand firm and face the failure, my team will too. It takes a lot of self-Awareness and humility to do this process well. Be patient with yourself, it’s a process.

  • PERSONALLY: Similar to my advice above, We each deal with failure differently. Is that bad? I don’t think so! the only bad thing, in my opinion, is if we turn our back on the failure and avoid the consequences. It takes a lot of Self-Awareness, patience and grit to face the failure head on armed with the right coping mechanisms. By doing so, I believe we will practice the right ways to deal with failure and build our character in the right ways. we will grow. If we don’t, i believe we rob ourselves of some of the greatest learning experiences we can have. do you agree?
  • PROFESSIONALLY: dealing with failure in the professional world is similar to our personal lives. The main difference is that we will sometimes be given guidance and direction from leadership or more experienced individuals on how to cope with the failure. “build more product”, “get the materials from a different supplier”, etc. the soft skills needed to deal with the emotional side of the failure would be the same. Do you agree?

Being human is all about learning and growth. If we never fail, we never learn. We all need to develop the ability to “see” our way through failure. Our ability to see ourselves (that’s the self awareness bit) will help us understand our part in the problem which can lead us to a place of acceptance. I’ve often thought that our ability to deal with failure or problems is defined by these two elements because they help us develop humility and empathy. With humility we truly have self awareness. With empathy we can accept our part as well as the part of others in the failure.

Dealing with failure is different for every individual, team, family, or business. Our coping mechanisms develop with each trial, failure or problem we face. You do not have to be a Lean professional to develop the ability to deal with failure. But as a Lean professional it would be wise to work on this attribute daily. My recommendation is to focus on self awareness and acceptance first as these really do lead to understanding and opportunities to try again. Do you agree? Are there other attributes that have helped you in dealing with failure? Are there individuals in your life that emulate some of these attributes?
