I believe that we learn most when we make mistakes and that change in behavior only happens once we realize that learning from our mistakes will make us better and stronger. What’s your experience? Is our personal life much different?

The WHY: we are surrounded with opportunities to learn from our mistakes…From our workplaces to our families and personal relationships. Is there one right way to change or learn from the mistakes we make?

The WIIFM: The more we understand that true change comes when we are willing to be vulnerable and learn from the mistakes we make; the more we improve the quality of our lives.

my Advice: “seek first to understand”, if you do, your ability to identify opportunities to learn will increase. You have to be willing to accept and take responsibility for making the mistake, then and only then, will you be able to learn. Put Pride Aside.

LEAN LEADERS: You will have great success at influencing the organization to learn from their mistakes by encouraging the team to accept responsibility and accountability for their mistakes. Starting with the small ones, the team will become more and more comfortable taking responsibility and accountability when they see it is better to admit fault than hide it. “red metrics help us learn and improve” and “I would rather know about it than be surprised by it” are a few phrases I always say…try it!

  • PERSONALLY: Learning from Mistakes requires a lot of self-awareness and understanding…Let’s think about it more like Being teachable and “seeking first to understand”. This is not something that we do naturally. It requires a lot of practice and Self-Care. How are you emulating these qualities in your personal lives? Do you give the Other people in your life the space to learn from their mistakes? I think these qualities are vital in today’s world. we need more patience and understanding, we need more learning from mistakes. Do you think so too?
  • PROFESSIONALLY: Learning from Mistakes is more about behavior than it is about the number of tools you know or how you encourage team members to be honest and open. Does the team, or you, seek blame first? Not all individuals are able to learn from mistakes. The ones who struggle most often are seeking power or are influenced by pride. they do not want to admit fault. How do you want to learn from mistakes? What would you want your team to do?

Culture change is never easy. Learning from Mistakes is one behavior of a culture that is willing to change. It takes self awareness and a lot of patience for people (Including yourself). if there is no understanding that acceptance and accountability brings growth, then Learning won’t happen. if my desire is to try, try, try and learn from mistakes; I’m headed in the right direction! That’s the Lean mindset needed for culture change to flourish. A Lean mindset teaches that failure is just an opportunity to learn and try again. The mindset earned through continuous process improvement and culture change really does change the individual and how they lead/Coach others. But first, pride MUST be set aside.
