Strategy or “Strat” planning requires critical thinking and attention to detail in most businesses that I have had experience with. What’s your experience? What about in your personal life? Do we do any strategic planning in our personal lives?
The WHY: sometimes in order for us to achieve our goals and what we really want, we have to strategize or create a plan to get there. If you’re anything like me…You might tend to overthink the process at times. We aren’t perfect, but having a strategy is always a good thing to start with!
The WIIFM: If we have done the hard work and have been able to set appropriate resolutions, like we learned about last month, We can now start putting together a plan to achieve the resolutions and goals we have set. Strategic planning is essential to sustain progress toward our goals and initiatives, it is the plan to achieve what we want when we want it.
my Advice: Assuming we have set appropriate resolutions and haven’t set the goal or bar too high…Now is not the time to start overthinking or overcomplicating the process of achievement. Choose a Strategy process and stick with it. Consistency equals clarity of mind and better decision-Making.
STRATEGIC PLANNING can be done in many different ways…Getting to the right process takes practice and consistency.
- PERSONALLY: some Strategic planning tools can still be utilized. I do not believe that a full blown Hoshin Kanri process would make sense for our personal lives. But I would suggest processes like Macro planning, 3-5 year outlooks, To-Do Lists, and Plan/Do/Check/Act tools can be utilized if desired. Not all of these tools will be useful to every individual. Choose what makes sense to you and go with it. Regularly check in with yourself to see progress and if there needs to be something changed to get back on track. (As For me: I use a simple color-Coded calendar and To-Do Lists. I am also constantly Stopping, reflecting, Reevaluating, and Course Correcting. Am I perfect at it? Heck no! But at least I learn from it and try again…)
- PROFESSIONALLY: Some years will be better than others. It’s called Continuous Improvement/Operational Excellence for a reason. But with diligence, practice, and an embracing culture; operational resilience will increase and the team will get better and better at Strategic Planning/Policy Deployment. The utilization of tools like Operational Excellence, Policy Deployment/Hoshin Kanri will support the team in their annual efforts to improve and achieve corporate strategy and goals. (As for the Business: Establish a Strategic Planning Methodology that works for the organization and be consistent with its implementation. Will parts of the process change? Of course! The team will get more and more efficient in its implementation and will add to or remove from the process as they continue to learn. There is no “one right way”, but there has to be a consistent way for the team to learn and monitor progress…)
